Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Leiden University. The first director of the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (2009-2016).  Main research fields include: Chinese literature and culture; language acquisition; and lingual and cultural translation in the broadest sense. Major publications include: Chinese Poetry in Times of Mind, Mayhem and Money.
