Professor in Asian Studies and Chair of the Department of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, co-editor of T’oung Pao. Main research fields include: literature, philology, history, religion, and art in ancient and medieval China. Major publications include: The Stele Inscriptions of Ch’in Shih-huang: Text and Ritual in Early Chinese Representation ; various edited volumes and some eighty articles and book chapters, including the opening chapter in the Cambridge History of Chinese Literature.
