Sebestyén Hompot is a PhD candidate in Sinology at the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna, Austria and doctoral fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 2020, he was admitted to the "New Chinese Studies" Plan Joint Sino-Foreign Ph.D. Training Program organized by China’s Confucius Institute. His research focuses on global history, Ming-Qing Chinese history, history of China's foreign relations with emphasis on the Ming-Qing tributary system and the Zheng He mission, as well as maritime history with emphasis on Xiamen and the Southern Fujian (Minnan) region. His current PhD project topic is The Zheng He Mission in Global Historical Perspective – Recent Trends in Mainland China’s Zheng He Historiography.
