Hryniewska, Joanna is a sinologist, scholar of Turkish studies, and literary translator. She previously taught courses in Oriental Linguistics and Modern Standard Chinese at University of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS) . Her main research interests lie in linguistics, including onomastics, semantics, phonetics, phonology, cognitive linguistics, comparative linguistics, and the methodology of teaching foreign languages.

Her representative monograph is Adaptation of Polish Surnames in the Chinese Language. A key academic article of hers is Adaptation of Foreign Proper Names in the Chinese Language Illustrated by Polish Surnames.

She has also translated several notable works, including Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-Sour Memoir of Eating in China by Fuchsia Dunlop (translated in 2011), Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother by Xinran (translated in 2012), and Chinese Whispers: Searching for Forgiveness in Beijing by Jan Wong (translated in 2013).
