Liu Yuping is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the College of International Education, Minzu University of China, a member of the National Steering Committee for Professional Degree Education in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, a standing council member of the Modernization of Chinese Teaching Association, and the director of the Open Research Center for Language Teaching, Cognition, and Acquisition. She serves as the editor-in-chief of Research on International Chinese Language Education.

Her primary research focus is on international Chinese language education, particularly in teaching and teacher studies. She has led multiple research projects funded by the National Social Science Fund and the Ministry of Education Social Science Fund. She has published monographs such as Teaching Chinese Grammar as a Second Language and Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition Theory, and has authored over 40 academic papers in journals such as World Chinese Teaching, Language Teaching and Research, and Chinese Language and Literature Application. Additionally, she has contributed to the compilation of several textbooks for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
