Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer is currently Professor Emeritus of East Asian Literature and Culture at the University of Göttingen. He previously held positions as Professor of Sinology at the University of Munich (LMU), Director of the Bavarian State Library in Germany, Professor at the University of Hamburg (UHH), and Director of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel. His main research areas include ancient Chinese literature and Buddhism, with academic interests spanning Chinese thought, religion, history, literature, and language. His representative works include The Hongming Ji , Ancient China , Modern China , and Fu Lu Shou: The Deities and Order of China .
