Introduction

The Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Language and Culture (IPCLC) at Renmin University of China, Beijing, was established in November 2006 and was formally inaugurated on March 26, 2007 by Councilor CHEN Zhili of the State Council and Minister Ji Zhou of the Ministry of Education. The Vice President of Renmin University, Professor DU Peng, is the Director of the Institute.

IPCLC is one of the first research centers set up by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (formerly the Hanban). The Institute undertakes large-scale research projects assigned by Hanban and the Ministry of Education, providing consultation and advice concerning cultural exchange and mutual learning among civilizations for the government and other institutes. In 2012, IPCLC became the secretariat of the World Conference on Sinology Executive Council, and in 2014 it became the secretariat of the “China Studies Program” Expert Committee.

The work of the Institute has four main components: 1) Building a high-end international academic platform around sinology / China Studies and liaising with overseas sinologists, i.e., by hosting the biennial “World Conference on Sinology” and the annual “China Studies Program” Ph.D. Students Forum. 2) Research and publication: editing World Sinology and the Bulletin, focusing on overseas public diplomacy, public policy, and soft power research results. 3) Bringing in renowned overseas scholars and organizing lectures. 4) Cooperate with the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and the International Office of Renmin University of China, providing academic services for scholars both at home and abroad.
