Professor of Sinology, KU Leuven (Belgium). Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Belgium. Member of the Institute for Advanced Studies, Historical Studies, Princeton. Main research fields include: cultural exchange between China and Europe (since the 17th century), rituality in intercultural contacts (ritual dances, funeral rituals, local communities, spirituality) and on the role of (Chinese) historiography in this exchange. Major publications include: Yang Tingyun, Confucian and Christian in Late Ming China: His Life and Thought (1998), The Fascinating God: A Challenge to Modern Chinese Theology Presented by a Text on the Name of God Written by a 17th Century Chinese Student of Theology (1995), The Interweaving of Rituals: Funerals in the Cultural Exchange between China and Europe (2008).
