Nienhauser, Jr. is the Halls-Bascom Chair Professor of Classical Chinese Literature in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the founding editor and chief editor of Chinese Literature: Essays, Articles, Reviews (CLEAR) in the U.S. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Humboldt Foundation in 2003
