The Jesuits’ Visual Culture Accommodated in China during the last Decades of the Ming Dynasty

The narrations of the Life of Jesus in the first collections of religious images published by the Jesuits in Late Ming China (17th century) played a significant role in the accommodation, Jesuits’ method of evangelization.

In this presentation I illustrate the different degrees of accommodation adopted by Jesuits João Da Rocha, Giulio Aleni and Adam Schall Von Bell in their visual collections, produced respectively in 1619, 1637 and 1640, in collaboration with Chinese artists.

The European work that served as inspiration and model for the Jesuits’ images in China was a collection of images very well-known in Jesuit circles at the end of 16th century: the Evangelicae Historiae Imagines (1593) by Jerónimo Nadal. The acquisition of Nadal’s precious volume in China Jesuits’ residences is attested as early as 1605, when Matteo Ricci was the superior of the Mission.
