美国《当代世界文学》杂志与中国文学海外传播
有80余年历史的英文杂志《当代世界文学》创办于1927年,最初名为《海外书览》(Books Abroad),1977年改用沿用今名。从1935年开始,《当代世界文学》就关注中国文学。当年的头刊刊登了Meng Chih的“转折时期的中国新文学”(The New Literature of Changing China)的文章。文章一开头就纠正西方学者认为中国“停滞不前”的错误认识。1939年至1967年期间,《海外书览》刊登了关于中国新文学的文章和介绍。文革期间,《当代世界文学》杂志没有刊登一篇介绍中国文学的文章。1979年发表了葛浩文(Howard Goldblatt)教授的文章“当代中国文学与新《文艺报》”(Contemporary Chinese Literature and the New Wenyi Bao),1981年又刊载了他的“重放的鲜花:中国文学复苏”(Fresh Flowers Abloom Again: Chinese Literature on the Rebound)。20世纪90年代以来,《当代世界文学》对中国文学的评论范围日益扩大,探讨的频率不断增加,如John Marney的“九十年代的中国政治与文学”(PRC Politics and Literature in the Nineties)、Michael S. Duke的“走向世界:中国当代文学的一个转折点”(Walking Toward the World: A Turning Point in Contemporary Chinese Fiction)、Jie Min的“变革中的中国小说”(Chinese Fiction in Transformation)、William Tay的“从王蒙看现代主义与社会主义现实主义”(Modernism and Socialist Realism: The Case of Wang Meng)、Bettina L. Knapp的“中国妇女作家的新纪元”(The New Era for Women Writers in China)、莫言的讲演稿“我的三本美国书”(My Three American Books),以及关于他的4篇研究论文,譬如“莫言的文学世界”(The Literature World of Mo Yan)、“西方人眼中的莫言”(Mo Yan through Western Eyes)、“土地:从父性到母性——论莫言的《红高粱》和《丰乳肥臀》”(From Fatherland to Motherland: On Mo Yan’s Red Sorghum and Big Breasts and Full Hips)等。杂志所属的纽斯塔国际文学奖从80年代开始不断邀请中国知名作家担任评委,多名中国作家成为此奖的候选人。杂志还是新设立的纽曼华语文学奖关于中国文学推介和研究的重要窗口,曾两度推出2008年首届纽曼奖项得主莫言。这些都显示中国文学的国际影响力在日益增强,对世界文学的贡献越来越大。

US Publication World Literature Today and the Overseas Dissemination of Chinese Literature Studies
The English periodical World Literature Today (WLT) has a history of more than 80 years. It was founded in the USA in 1927 and appeared first under the title Books Abroad. In 1977 the title was changed to World Literature Today. Since 1935 this periodical has started to pay attention to Chinese literature. The first article on China published in 1935 was Meng Chih’s “The New Literature of Changing China”, and this article could correct many misconceptions of foreign scholars about the “unchanging” character of Chinese literature. Between 1939 and 1967 eight articles or introductions concerning modern Chinese literature were published in WLT, but during the ten years of the Cultural Revolution not even one article was published. In 1979 Howard Goldblatt published the article “Contemporary Chinese Literature and the New Wenyi bao”, and his another article “Fresh Flowers Abloom Again: China’s Literature on the Rebound” appeared in 1981. Since the 1990s, WLT shows more ever more interest in Chinese literature with more Chinese writers and works reviewed more frequently. Among the outstanding contributions published in this periodical are John Marney, “PRC Politics and Literature in the Nineties”, Michael S. Duke “Walking Toward the World: A Turning Point in Contemporary Chinese Fiction”, Jie Min, “Chinese Fiction in Transformation”, William Tay, “Modernism and Socialist Realism: The Case of Wang Meng”, Bettina L. Knapp, “The New Era for Women Writers in China”, Mo Yan’s speech “My Three American Books”, and articles about Mo Yan, for example “The Literature World of Mo Yan”, “Mo Yan through Western Eyes”, “From Fatherland to Motherland: On Mo Yan’s Red Sorghum and Big Breasts and Full Hips”. Since the 1980s the WLT has invited some Chinese writers and scholars to work as judges for the “Neustadt Prize for International Literature” sponsored by WLT, and some Chinese writers have been elected as the candidates for it. WLT is also involved in the newly-established “Newman Prize for Chinese Literature” by featuring articles about the candidates and Mo Yan, the first winner of this award, in 2008. All this indicates, to some extent, the greater contribution and influence of Chinese literature in the world today.
