Chinese Medieval (filial) texts and their connection to contemporary rituals and oral tradition

I am a Sinologist engaged in anthropological research combining in my forthcoming PhD thesis philological and anthropological methods. My starting point is Medieval filial texts, namely the Baoenjing sutra containing a number of parables about filiality. Filiality is the basic value of Confucian morals. It may be regarded as an essential part of the Chinese family system and of the Chinese state structure up until modern times. The filial texts have deep significance in the modern Chinese cult of ancestors, too, especially in Yunnan, which has been one of the most colourful multi-ethnic and multi-cultural parts of China. There, in every part of the prefecture, there are so-called Dongjing Associations which play an important part in religious ceremonies. They blend Confucian, Buddhist, Taoist elements in their beliefs and rituals, so they exemplify vividly the living religious syncretism. During community rituals, for example funerals, the Dongjing Associations of the villages are usually invited to chant the Baoenjing sutra.

The aim of my paper is to examine the textual repertoires of the Kunming Dongjing Association in the light of my ongoing research. After a brief historical and structural introduction about the Kunming Dongjing Association, I shall examine their performances during life-cycle rituals.

The study of present-day rituals and performances could throw light on the use and function of old medieval texts.

中国中古孝道文献及其与现代仪式和口述传统的联系

作为一名汉学研究者，我目前致力于人类学方面的研究。在即将完成的博士论文中，我将人类学方法与文献学方法相结合进行研究。我的研究基于中古孝道文献，即包含了许多孝道喻言的《报恩经》。孝是儒家伦理的基本价值理念。直到现在，孝仍然被认为是中国家庭系统及国家结构的重要组成部分。并且，在现代中国对祖先的祭仪中，孝道文献也有着深刻的重要性。这一点尤其体现在云南——中国有着最丰富多样民族与文化的省份之一。在那里，每个地区都设有一个被称作洞经会的组织，该组织在宗教仪式中起着至关重要的作用。洞经会成员在他们的信仰和仪式中混合了儒家、佛教以及道教的元素，并由此生动地树立了宗教融合的鲜活典范。在团体仪式，例如葬礼中，村里的洞经会往往被邀请吟唱《报恩经》。

本文力图依据我现在的研究，考察昆明洞经会的曲目文本。在简单介绍昆明洞经会的历史与结构之后，我将考察他们在生命循环仪式中的表演。

通过对现代仪式及其表演的研究，可以阐明中古文献的用途和功能。
