Image-Based Readings of the Entire Hexagram Sequence in the Yijing

The traditional interpretation of Zhou Yi can be divided into two schools: xiangshu (symbols and numbers) and yili (meaning and reasoning). The exegetical strategy of the yili school is the one-by-one interpretation of individual hexagrams. The purpose of my paper is to use the perspective of “meaning and reasoning” to propose a symbolic explanation for the whole order of hexagrams. I think that the Zhou Yi should be primarily perceived and interpreted as a kind of “artifact,” and it is a work that uses the medium of symbolic signs. In the last few years, I have had the opportunity to be in contact with the new generation of Chinese artists. An artist should have the enthusiasm and energyto create, and make good use of multiple interpretive frameworks. Thus, also having been influenced by them, I try to use a creative method to probe into and to understand the cultural signs of the rules and symbols of the Zhou Yi. I search for an open strategy to interpret the book, namely to obtain a variety of meaning and polyvalence, but this does not mean that I start from “zero,” because the ancients have handed down to us many precious resources and approaches for interpretation. I also hope that their interpretations will provide some revelations and inspirations.
