The Hanban held a “Meeting Concerning the International Popularization of Han-Chinese”

On the 27th of November 2009 the “Meeting Concerning the International Popularization of Han-Chinese” was held in the Hanban office, namely the head office of the Confucius Institute. The meeting was directed by the vice director of the Hanban, Mr. Jianfei Ma. The participants listened to the work reports of 2009 and plans for 2010 of the first and second group of the study base, and they attended to the remarks of experts. Vice rector Yulu Chen took part in the meeting as a member of the experts group, and representing the “study base”, namely the Hantuisuo of Renmin University of China he delivered the first report on the work of this year and of the plans for next year.  

In his report vice rector Yulu Chen pointed out that the Hantuisuo of Renmin University of China could under the leadership of the university and of the Hanban clarify the main focus of the work, the main tasks, the study orientations and the administration mode, they established a board of directors and decided on the proper obligations and concurrent post research members. The Hantuisuo undertook and basically finished eight important research projects from the Ministry of Education and from the Hanban, and among these the “Study Report on the Strategic International Popularization of Han-Chinese” and the “Study Report on Volunteer Teachers of Han-Chinese” met the full support of Yandong Liu, a State Council Committee Member. The Hantuisuo also wants to invite public bids and decided on ten sub-projects concerning the “research of the international popularization of Han-Chinese”. At the same time, the members of the Hantuisuo also undertook a big amount of basic study research, they have published more than 100 articles in the period from 2008 to 2009, they also held more than 20 academic lectures and scholarly presentations. The Hantuisuo also successfully organized two “World Conferences of Sinology” and published the journal World Sinology. Two websites have been created: “The Special Website of Hantuisuo” and the “Website of the World Conference of Sinology”.

At the conference, the director of Hanban, Mr. Lin Xu, and the participating scholars fully supported the work of the Hantuisuo of Renmin University of China in the year 2009.
 According to our information, the first and second group of research centers for the popularization of Han-Chinese are 15 altogether, they are in following institutions: Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Peking University, Beijing Foreign Languages University, Beijing University of Languages, University of Shandong, University of Xiamen, Normal University of Central China, Education Office of the Province of Henan, Education Office of the Uighur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, Wuhan University, Nankai University, Sun Yatsen University, Normal University of Hainan, and the College of Foreign Languages in Dalian. Besides that, the third group of study centers plans the establishment of four new centers: the North-East Center for the International popularization of Han-Chinese, the International Propaganda of Han-Chinese Center, the International Commercial Han-Chinese Education and Resources Center (Beijing), and the International Commercial Han-Chinese Education and Resources Center (Shanghai).

The directors and deans of the schools and institutions where these centers are located took part in this meeting. The vice dean of the School of Liberal Arts of RUC, Youzhuang Geng, and the vice director of the Hantuisuo, Xiuyan Liu, took part in this meeting as representatives of the Hantuisuo of Renmin University of China.
