Call for Research Grant Proposals “China Studies Program” Seeks Proposals for Research Grants

With the help of “China Studies Program” (CSP), The Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Language and Culture (IPCLC) at Renmin University of China seeks proposals for Research Grants. IPCLC serves as the Secretariat of the World Conference on Sinology and the Secretariat of Expert Committee of the China Studies Program. “China Studies Program” provides Research Grants to talented internationalPh.D. students andearly-career scholars in the area of Sinology and China Studies studying or working at Chinese oroverseas universities. This research grant is designed to help the young scholars with their writing and research skills.

I. Project Overview

The grant aims to fund highly competitive research projects on a wide range of topics in humanities and social sciences related to sinology and China Studies. The project should be complete within2 years. Awards for research grants are up to 50,000 RMB. The funds can be used for research-related expenses such as honorarium, travel expenses to scholarly conferences, books, computer, and other expenses directly related to conducting this research. As part of the proposal, applicants should provide a budget that outlines anticipated research-related expenses.

II. Applicant Eligibility

1. Applicants must be international Ph.D.students or postdoctoral fellows under the age of 45, with a topic related to sinology or China studies,capable of conductinga research independently.

2. Applicants must invite one Chinese supervisor and one international supervisor (Associate Professor or Full Professor) monitoring the research project.

3. Applicants with relevant researchexperience oroutstanding research resultsare strongly encouraged.

III. Grant Management

1. IPCLC will be in charge of the management of the grants.

2. Applicantsshouldcomplete the "Application Form for the China Studies Program Research Grant" (hereinafter referred to as the "Application Form") and serve as the major undertaker. “The Application Form”is a part of the Agreement.

3. Applicants submit the research proposal electronically, and IPCLC organize a Review Committee to review the research proposals. Results of the selection will be publicized on the website.

4. Research Grantees sign the "China Studies Program Research Grant Agreement” upon the approval of the application.

5. Research Grantees are required to submit a brief progress report (an extended abstract and research plan, 2 pages) midway through the grant period. A research paperin a journal-ready format will be submitted at the end of the grant period. Grantees are encouraged toproduce research reports, research policy briefs, and present their research resultson professional conferencesrelated to their research topics.

6. All relevant results produced by this project grant should be indicated as “Funded by China Studies Program”.

IV. Application Timeline and Procedures

1. Deadline of application:Friday,September 20, 2021,11:59PM (Beijing Time).

2. The “Application Form”is submitted electronically via e-mail to hantui@ruc.edu.cn.

3. The “Application Form” should be endorsed by the Chinese and international supervisors monitoring the research.

4. Research Grantees will receive 60% of the research grants upon the approval of the research application, and the remaining grant will be released after the project is completed.

5. The project evaluation results will be released at the end of October, 2021.
