Call for Applications: 2022China Studies Program (CSP) Online Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship

In order to support doctoral students from various countries who are unable to conduct academic research in China due to the pandemic, China Studies Program (CSP) establishes an Online Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship to provide academic support for research on sinology and Chinese studies.

1. Overview

The Online Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship of China Studies Program (CSP) aims to fund non-Chinese doctoral students who are officially registered in non-Chinese universities and academic institutions. The student should demonstrate strong academic performance with research projects that have potential academic impact. The duration of the fellowship is one year. The fellowship stipends will be 20,000 RMB for the doctoral student, and 10,000 RMB for the Chinese cooperating advisor.

2. Applicant Eligibility

(1) Applicants must be non-Chinese doctoral students who are officially registered in non-Chinese universities and academic institutions. Students and scholars who have already received financial support from China Studies Program (CSP) are not eligible to apply. Students who have been admitted to other programs under China Studies Program (CSP) but were not able to come to China due to the pandemic may apply and transfer to this program.

(2) Applicants should conduct research in humanities, social sciences, linguistics, and other fields that are related to sinology or China studies.

(3) Preference will be given to students who have high level of Chinese proficiency.

(4) Applicants’ research projects should be conducted under the guidance of both their Chinese and non-Chinese advisors (namely, their cooperating advisors in Chinese universities and the advisors from their own universities).

3. Advisor Eligibility

(1) The cooperating advisor must be a full-time professor or an eligible doctoral advisor from a Chinese university. Professors from the 18 Chinese partner universities of China Studies Program (CSP) are preferred.

(2) If the applicant already has a prospective advisor, he/she may contact the professor directly. The professor should complete the Letter of Acceptance for the applicant (see Attachment No. 3).

(3) If the applicant does not have a prospective advisor, he/she may indicate the research interests of their potential advisors. The Secretariat of the Expert Committee of China Studies Program will match them with a professor at Renmin University of China.

4. Application Process and Timeline

(1) The deadline of the application is October 15, 2022 (Beijing time).

(2)The applicants should complete the “Application Form for Online Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship of China Studies Program (CSP)” (hereinafter referred to as the “Application Form”).

(3) The Applicant must submit at least two recommendation letters from Chinese or non-Chinese professors, one of which must be from a non-Chinese researcher.

(4) The Applicant should send the “Application Form”, HSK transcript, a certificate issued by his/her university that proves their student status, recommendation letters, the resume and the acceptance letter of the Chinese advisor (if the applicant has one) and other relevant materials to wangxinsheng@chinese.cn.

(4) The result will be released by the end of November,  2022, and applicants will be notified by email.

5. Fellowship Management

(1) The applications will be reviewed by a committee constituted by Chinese and international experts.

(2) Upon the approval of the application, the admitted doctoral students will receive 10,000 RMB research allowance, his/her Chinese doctoral supervisor will receive 10,000 RMB expert guidance fee from China Studies Program (CSP). Upon the completion of the project, the doctoral student should submit a project review report. Another 10,000 RMB allowance will be granted if they pass the final evaluation.

(3) The admitted doctoral students are encouraged to write academic papers and submit them by the end of the program. China Studies Program (CSP) will select and award papers on an annual basis.
