Yang Xusheng

Deputy Director of the Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Language and Culture at Renmin University and Deputy Director of the Chinese Studies Research Centre; PhD from Tübingen University. Lecturer in the East Asia Institute Chinese Department at Tübingen University 1994-99 and the Chinese Department of the Non-European Cultures Institute at Erlangen University (2001-03); Member of the Research Project ‘Research into Transcultural Religion and the History of Religion’ at Bonn University (1997-98). Specially appointed researcher by German Stiftung Weltethos (2004-); Specially appointed researcher at Monumenta Serica Center (2006-); Deputy Editor of International Sinology; Editor of International Sinology Research Documents.

Engaged in research in the fields of the history of Chinese religious thought; German philosophy; aesthetics; European sinology. Main publications include Immanente Transzendenz: Eine Untersuchung der Transzendenzerfahrung in der antiken chinesischen Religiosität (Tübingen, 2004); translations include Hans Küng, Tracing the Way: Spiritual Dimensions of World Religions (Beijing Sanlian, 2007); has also published numerous articles on intellectual history and aesthetics; currently engaged in translating The Collected Works of Gadamer.
