Looking at the Past and Future Prospects of “New Sinology”:A New Perspective of the History of Academic Studies

The term “new sinology” appeared for the first time in the 21st century, originating from a politician, the former premier of Australia, Mr. Kevin Rudd. Thereafter, some important people from other countries from outside the academic community also began to use the term “new sinology,” although their understandings of its meaning differed. The use of this term with “differences and similarities” was taken up by the media and gradually formed a vague idea that seemed to be complete but in fact lacked a common core. Moreover, this vague idea has slipped into the consciousness of the wider public. The different concepts connected with “new sinology” have been used first by non-academics, which seems to show that people from all social strata are more concerned for “sinology” in the growing global interest in Chinese culture. This also shows that, seen from the academic perspective, the discussion of the idea of “new sinology” should be considered one topic on the agenda of discussion.

Tsinghua University has a long academic tradition of sinological research. The author has organized a study project of the two Tsinghua Universities from both sides of the Taiwan Strait in researching the “paradigm shift of sinology,” which coincided with the 100 years anniversary of the founding of Tsinghua. Based on the scholarly community of the two Tsinghua Universities, we have presented a first plan of “new sinology” and have created a global platform of “new sinology,” and we have planned to discuss and to develop the system and theory of “new sinology” in the next ten years together with leading international scholars. We hope that this important idea, first articulated by non-experts, will thus be filled with academic value and meaning.

This essay is a study concerning academic history, tracing the origin, development and historical background of the concepts of “new sinology” raised by different important people coming from the non-academic world, and analyzing the common elements and differences hidden in this concept. At the same time I will review the idea and project of the “new sinology” discussion platform as it developed from Taipei to a global project, and this retrospective exploration into its history will also reveal the future direction of developments in “new sinology.”
