When Sinology goes Global: Reflections on a transcultural Turn
Barbara Mittler
University of Heidelberger
This paper discusses what happens when sinology is reconceived not as the study of China alone, but of China in its global context. Taking the example of New Chinese Music on the one hand and of China's print media world in the early 20th century on the other, this paper argues for a turn toward studying the many interconnections of China's New Music/New Media with that of the world, rather than stressing its "specific" "national" traits alone.
