Dr. Chloë Starr successfully finishes her research and teaching task at IPCLC
On March 30, 2009 Dr. Chloë Starr finished her seven-month research project as a visiting research fellow from Oxford University at the Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Language and Culture (IPCLC).
Dr. Starr started her research at IPCLC in September 2008. Her research article “The rise of Chinese language teaching and concomitant demise of Classical Chinese teaching in the UK” offers an analysis of the situation of teaching and learning Chinese in the UK. Dr. Starr points out that although the extent and influence of modern Chinese language and culture teaching in the UK is expanding, teaching and research into classical Chinese language and culture in British colleges and universities is decreasing. Her research report presents valuable suggestions regarding improving the international dissemination of Chinese language and culture. During her time researching at the Institute, Dr. Starr, together with another two visiting research fellows Dr. Dwight Hopkins and Dr. Sharon Y. Kim, undertook a series lectures “Problems and Methods of Contemporary Academic Studies on Humanities” for the undergraduate students of the School of Liberal Arts. The four lectures Dr. Starr offered were: “Narrator and Narratology”, “Characterization”, “Text and Edition”, “Reading Gender as Narrative”.
Besides her research and teaching, Dr. Starr helped translate a great deal of Chinese materials into English for IPCLC, the National Office of Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language (Hanban) and the International Office of Renmin University of China. Dr. Starr was also invited to give lectures in other universities in Beijing. Dr. Starr has been widely praised for her conscientious work ethic and warm-hearted personality. She also contributed to the future cooperation with overseas visiting research fellows of IPCLC.
